Tougher than expected…
I got a call around 7pm (TX time) from Travis’ wife, Katie. She was not necessarily doing too well. She called to get some advice and talk to someone who was familiar with what Travis has been doing (and will be going through). She said that he got off to a slow start (which is what I had expected). The temperature in Denver was in the 90’s and Travis does not do well in the heat. For the passed week he has been feeling “flat” and has not had the best rest. She said at the 5 hr mark today he was in low spirits. He had run out of water, was legitimately (mildly)dehydrated and talking a little “crazy talk”. He commented to her that it was already tougher than he had expected.
During this time she was having dinner with his family a few hours down from the start and his family was fairly concerned about his endeavor(and also worried about her camping solo for 8 days). This was weighing heavy on Katie and she wanted to just get some of these things off her chest. She said she was going to drive down to Buena Vista, which is about 3 days into the race for Travis, where she would wait for him to come thru. I encouraged her to be positive and upbeat and let me know if she finds out anything new on they’re end.
Nobody said this was going to be easy……

Let's keep this short and sweet. HammerHead Bicycles is different! There is no other place like us.
First and foremost we are riders, and believe us, that makes a difference. We are not casual riders who work at a shop for beer money. We are frame builders, racers, trail builders, endurance athletes and many things in between. We are life-long, sold-out riders who are committed to these crazy two wheeled machines.
Thanks for the update Cody…I will keep Travis in my thoughts and prayers.
Lara and I will be praying for Travis and Katie. We are excited and now, with this report, nervous for them also.
I believe in Travis, I believe he’s well trained and well prepared, he’ll get through this event. Thanks for the update!
Agreed Anthony, there is trained and untrained. Travis sounds very trained to me.
Travis can do it.
I have supreme faith in him.
I’m NOT surprised he’s finding the start hard.
I can’t imagine doing this and NOT finding the first day or two terrifically difficult.
Soo much change to accomodate: location, altitude, trail type, excitement, nervousness, really being solo in the backcountry. It’s HUGE.
But I believe he’s ready for it and up to it.
Katie, if you read this, just give him encouragement and support. I bet he’s in much better spirits after the second day closes for him, much better by the time he gets to B.V.
Hang in there Travis!!!!!
Having just finished a 7 day mountain bike race, I understand what Cody is feeling. Please tell him that my first day was absolutlely the hardest day of all, and each day I felt better and better. Just keep pushing on, and trust in the fact that you are well trained and prepared.
We look forward to meeting you in Durango, if you need anything or any assistance Mindy and I are available to help, 512 293-6332.
