Tallboy Carbon RP23 Frame - The pinnacle of 29er FS performance currently available
The Tallboy utilizes the aptly named Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension system which was created in the mid-'90s, by Outland Sports. They were talented suspension designers, but weak on business management. The Outland VPP bikes received stellar reviews, but quickly folded because of mismanagement.
Outland's VPP design and patents were all but forgotten about until Santa Cruz acquired the rights and began selling the Blur, a VPP-based XC bike, in 2002. The VPP design places pivots so that the pedaling forces hold the suspension in one position, partway into the travel. The trick is to manipulate the VPP design by specifically locating the pivot points so the effects of pedaling forces are strong enough to hold the suspension in a neutral position but not so strong as to hold it there when the bike encounters a bump. Santa Cruz has done an excellent job the last 8 years of refining the design and has created a perfect balance with the Tallboy's suspension configuration. The result: The bike pedals completely bob-free, and offers wonderfully plush travel when things get rough.
Santa Cruz knocked it out of the park on their first 29er offering. They not only have the VPP suspension system perfectly dialed, they introduced the Tallboy as a full carbon frame. We have sold quite a few of these locally and every frame (all sizes & colors) has weighed less than 5lbs 4oz out of the box. But don't let the Carbon & light weight fool you, this frame is built to last. It has lateral stiffness in the bottom bracket & rear end on par with much beefier frames like the Niner RIP9 or Pivot 429. The front end follows suit with a Tapered Head Tube & Integrated Headset, pair that with a Tapered Steerer Tube Fork & 15mm or 20mm Thru Axle front hub & you have a rock solid front end. The VPP offers 100mm of travel and Santa Cruz has approved the use of 120mm forks.
You have two rear shock options in the Rock Shock Monarch & FoxRP23. Our experience setting up the Tallboy has us combining the Monarch Rear w/ a Reba XX front for a more racy feel & RP23 w/ the F29 up front for a little more plush feel. The Tallboy is the most versatile 29er FS frame currently on the market. We have set it up as a 23.5lb XC Race Machine and a 28lb Plush Trailbike. It can be set up as you wish.
